A certificate warning appears after a hostname change

Reissue the device certificate, regenerate the web configuration, and trust the pyCANdo certificate chain.

  • The browser reports a certificate-name error after the hostname changed.
  • The page loads with a trust warning or live connections fail.

Restore a trusted connection

The hostname used in the browser, the certificate names, and the generated web configuration must agree.

  1. Confirm the final hostname

Decide which hostname users will enter in the browser and confirm that it resolves to this device. The certificate must be issued for that name.

  2. Provision the certificate again

Reissue the device certificate and regenerate the nginx configuration for the current hostname.

    sudo pcdup cert
    sudo pcdnginx
    sudo nginx -t
    sudo systemctl reload nginx
  3. Verify browser trust

Install or trust the public pyCANdo certificate authority on the client computer if it is not already trusted, then fully reopen the browser.

  4. Open the dashboard with the final hostname

Do not use an old bookmark or raw IP address if the certificate was issued for the hostname. Confirm that both the page and live dashboard connections work.
